Floating Gin Palace

Well, this looks like a proper day out. Even if you have no interest in watching people getting drunk on a boat in the 1960s there are some nice Thames-side shots of London and Greenwich to admire. British Pathé really is the gift that keeps on giving. I could lose hours and hours watching all their old films.
Great stuff. Hard to imagine a similar film made now being so keen to emphasise the boozing, smoking, gambling angle quite so much.
And Greenwich does look amazingly similar to the way it looks now (bar the absence of the horrible, horrible new restaurants on the pier).

Yep, I can’t imagine a film being made now highlighting all of that stuff without a moralistic overtone. Looking through the Pathe archives there are all sorts of weird and wonderful things I can’t imagine being covered now. It is a little like an alternative history of the UK.
I thought the same about Greenwich. This film made me all the more annoyed/angry/sad about those new restaurants. Such a shame.

That’s fascinating, so different to a trip over the same stretch now.

It really is, isn’t it? Funny how quickly the Thames changed from a working river to a place where expensive flats sit.
