A Lick of Paint

Following a brief blogging hiatus I thought I’d give this old place a fresh look. I may well change the banner image, or the fonts, or whatever else in due course, as the mood suits. So don’t be alarmed by any further changes, dear reader. But I haven’t just been mucking around with my WordPress Dashboard. I have also actually written some new blog posts, which makes a nice change from my usual empty promises about writing something. They will appear over the next few days I expect, and that initial flurry of activity will inevitably be followed by sporadic posting at best, and another unplanned hiatus at worst, depending on time commitments and your correspondent’s commitment, or lack thereof. Anyway, stay tuned and all that.
Welcome back! I had ambitious plans for my new blog but got bored with both planned epic posts. I hope yours will spur me on.

Mine are not the most enlightening or inspiring posts, but they are a start, I guess. I had a free evening and ended up spending a good few hours writing. Amid my general daily procrastination I forget how much I actually enjoy writing.
I look forward to your epic posts. I’d love to write long, detailed articles but I struggle with the balance of finding a subject that I can write about in some depth, with making it actually interesting to read, plus the usual excuses about time etc. I have an ongoing internal dialogue over what is better – short, frequent posts or long, infrequent ones. It is not the most interesting argument so I’ll leave it there, for now.

Same dilemma here. I don’t like either option for myself. Since I tend to gravitate toward personal blogging, short and frequent posts seem needy and frequently unnecessary, while longer more thoughtful posts just seem depressing when I think about the effort:readership ratio.

I feel the same. Then I start wondering about whether I’m just blogging for myself, or if I’m blogging for some form of readership, no matter how small, or un(der)developed. If it is just for me, then I don’t worry too much about the shorter posts. If it is for anyone else, then I do sometimes get a little concerned that the shorter stuff annoys.
Saying that, I’m happy reading anything from my favourite bloggers, long or short. Even pretty frivolous posts don’t really annoy me.
Maybe I just need to spend less time thinking about blogging and more time doing it.

I recently rediscovered the joys of fiction contests, but most of the time they don’t allow your work to be previously published. And granted, I’ve only entered one fiction contest but it was enough to get my brain going in a way that blogging can’t.

Now writing more fiction is certainly on my “to do” list. I should probably check out more contests and the like, if only to motivate me to write something.

I’m still thinking that I want to start a private fiction group blog or something where a writer can get feedback but still retain copyright. Or maybe now that I’m in a town of over 1000 people maybe I can find a real life group. Or something.

Yep, copyright is certainly a concern. But then so is reading out stuff to strangers in real life. I might just hide it all away in a box and hope for a wonderful posthumous literary career, hopefully many, many years from now.

You’ve motivated me to look into writing groups in the area. They offer classes, but it costs money. As a spendthrift, I’m conflicted.
If my workday afternoon pans out to be as slow as this morning has been, perhaps I’ll set up a private, invite-only group blog. I don’t know any fiction writers outside of the blogosphere, though, so this endeavor might be doomed from the start.

Slow work days got a whole lit more productive with the advent of widespread internet access. Glad to be a motivation!

Well that was easy. The blog setup part anyway. Now I just need to come up with a killer banner. And find people who are interested in joining.
