In theory, the Friday Lunchtime Pint is a wonderful thing. It is a reward after four and half days of hard graft. Or four and a half days of avoiding hard graft, which is just as much hard work in its own way. It is a way to warm up for the weekend. A little loosener before the main festivities. If nothing else it makes the last three hours of the working week a little more bearable. Ideally it makes the last three hours of the working week nearer two hours, if you plan it right. A lovely little film from 1944 on the history and importance of the English Inn, including some wonderful and wistful footage on how inns and pubs once looked and probably should still look. Gathering for a pint has always been about a whole lot more than the beer, as this film shows. Cheers!

A week in the woods and what came before it

I’m sure that every journey begins long before the actual departure. However, a camping holiday seemed to require substantially more planning and preparation than a hotel city break, say. Admittedly, my good wife did the majority of packing and planning, with themed collapsible crates full of everything we might need for a week’s camping. Such contingency planning would come into its own should we encounter the negative aspects of an English summer. I reminded myself that my usual holiday packing philosophy, of throwing whatever comes to hand in five minutes flat as you can always buy what you forget at the other end, was probably not sensible when it comes to a week in the wilderness.
