I write, but I am not a writer

Upon asking the question, “What do you do, then?” surely the most chilling words us bloggers can hear are:

“I’m a writer.”

This is not going to end well. If they genuinely are, we are consumed by a combination of admiration and envy. If it turns out they write blurbs for catalogues or other such hackery, then we are beyond annoyed.

After all, we write. We write regularly, on all manner of subjects. And we care about what we write.

What is a session beer?

Today has been a worthwhile and constructive day. I have been taking part in a discussion on defining what actually constitutes a ‘session beer’, with ideas floating around Twitter and the likes of Double Word Score.

There seems to be some disagreement over whether the definition should be set by the strength of the beer, or by something more fluid. Get it? Fluid? Hah. My material is gold, I tell you. Read the rest of this entry »

Building those coalitions

I think what I like about WordPress most is the way the platform helps foster communities and encourages networking amongst its users. Or, to put it another way, it is full of lots of good people, who are fun to read, respond to, and generally get to know. In a non-scary, non-stalker-y sense, I hasten to add. Sickday with the Mets

So, I get to the station this morning and feel awful. Truly awful. Y’know, with italics and everything. And for once, I do the sensible thing. I turn around, head straight home and phone in sick. I’m not going to be one of those martyrs spreading my illness on the train, at my workplace, and on the train home. I sometimes feel guilty being off work ill, but not today. Hodgson’s first coup as Joe Cole signs for Liverpool

Liverpool’s signing of Joe Cole is a positive sign, both on and off the pitch, and some welcome good news for the team’s supporters after a horrible season and the uncertainties over the club’s ownership and finances. Cole should bring some much-needed creativity to the side, particularly since the departure of Yossi Benayoun to, of all clubs, Chelsea. Read the rest of this entry »
