A lovely new song from Kurt Vile, the near-title track from his forthcoming album Waking On A Pretty Daze. The video shows the making of the album cover and is rather lovely too. It is a long song, but it doesn’t outstay its welcome. I could listen to it all day, and pretty much have been.
Right, finally I’m beginning my 1993-in-music-type-project in earnest, starting with a post on the Manic Street Preachers’ second album, Gold Against the Soul. While it is far from my favourite album of 1993, it was the first album I could gather up enough thoughts and opinions to write about. The Manics were a band that I read about before I listened to. I remember picking up a cassette of their single Little Baby Nothing in the bargain bin at Woolworth’s. I loved it, but it was far less abrasive than I’d imagined they’d sound from reading the reviews and interviews. Still, it was the start of them being one of my favourite groups of my teenage years. I think it must have been September 1992 when a school friend of mine handed me a beat-up C90 tape. He had borrowed some albums from his older brother and dubbed them on to the cassette. It is a point that has made before, and has no doubt been made in a more eloquent way, but the internet is full of people presenting something that someone else has actually produced. Much of what the internet churns out is essentially repeats of something that has already been churned out on the internet. I’m not getting on my high horse here, it is second nature for most of us. We share things on Facebook. We retweet. We reblog on Tumblr and WordPress. We embed videos and songs and photos from other people.
Elvis Costello wrote and recorded his first album while also working as a computer operator for the Elizabeth Arden factory, only resigning when his record company agreed to match his salary. Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner continued his day job of laying floors even once they became successful.
