Saturday Night Movie: Discovering Electronic Music
by Steve
A fun little documentary from 1983, showing the potential of electronic music and what the future might hold.
Some of the sounds highlighted in the film still sound pretty amazing, others now sound hugely nostalgic, which is an odd sensation considering they were once so futuristic. Also worth noting the nods to jazz and modern classical music using electronic music and manipulation – I guess the sheer expense of the equipment at the time limited who could use a lot of this sort of stuff. This is a snapshot of that time when synthesizers and the like were only just becoming affordable, before electronic music had been more fully democratised, and when it was still the sound of the future rather than something we pretty much take for granted.
I would never have guessed the age of the video unless you had said, the style seemed so dated and would have thought it was from the early 1970s after the Moog took off. Interesting though.
